Diploma in Hand Surgery (European)
Matthew is a Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon based in Edinburgh. His specialist practice is dedicated entirely to the hand and wrist, including age-related, sporting and traumatic hand conditions. Matthew is one of the few UK hand surgeons to hold both the British and European Diplomas in Hand Surgery.
Matthew Brown’s NHS practice is at the Lothian Hand Unit at St John’s Hospital in Livingston (NHS Lothian) – Scotland's largest orthoplastic hand unit.
Matthew consults privately at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital in Edinburgh.
Matthew’s specialist surgical practice is dedicated entirely to the hand and wrist. Matthew is on the Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, and he holds both the British (BSSH) and European (FESSH) postgraduate Diplomas in Hand Surgery.
Matthew is especially interested in hand and wrist arthritis (including base of thumb arthritis), Dupuytren’s disease, arthroscopic (keyhole) wrist surgery, sports injuries (including bone, tendon and ligament injury) and nerve compression syndromes (including carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome). His busy NHS practice includes three out-patient hand clinics and three hand operating lists each week.
Matthew provides compassionate and evidence-based surgical care, works closely with hand therapy colleagues and always prioritises non-surgical treatments before considering surgery.
